5th Grade Creates Sculptural Eyewear

The Class of 2031 has been creating their own sculptural eyewear inspired by the work of Cyrus Kabiru. 在本单元中, 5th Graders learned about the African sculpture artist who is best known for his elaborate and detailed sculptural spectacles, or "C-Stunners," made from found objects and recycled material sourced on the streets of Nairobi. This Kenyan sculptor and painter is committed to "giving trash a second chance," and reducing waste. Kabiru was named a TED Fellow in 2012 for his unique artistic approach and his commitment to the environment.

To begin creating their eyewear, students spent time sketching out ideas on a scaled-rendering. They were asked to think about wear-ability, symmetry, and an unique design. Primarily using materials that would have otherwise been discarded, students carefully planned and then attached symmetrical parts, embellishing with a variety of Art Studio materials. The main frame of the eyewear was laser cut in the 较低的学校 Tinker Lab.
